GSA Guide - The Regent Cinemas Claimed

The Regent Cinema was one of the original Hoyts' Picture Palaces from the 1920s. Unfortunately only part of the foyer remains.

History: 

The Regent Theatre was a multi-cinema picture palace completed in 1929 and operated by Hoyts. It introduced the opulence and grandeur of the great Hollywood era to Queensland. The interior decoration was a mixture of Spanish Gothic and Romanesque. The mezzanine foyer contained a white marble staircase. Only the foyer remains and is now used as a cafe. The internal structures were demolished to make way for a 40 story tower.
 

Building Materials: 

Cream coloured marble has been used on facade pillars with fine-grained granite pavers. An impressive marble staircase is likely to contain marble from the Rockhampton or Cairns areas.
