The impressive seven story building, originally named Shell House, is faced with Benedict Stone, manufactured in Brisbane in the late 1920s and 1930s from crushed natural stone.

History:

This building, originally Shell House, was erected in 1932 as offices for Shell Co of Australia Ltd. After a refurbishment in 1997, the seven Storey building was opened as (63) residential apartments.

Original features of the building such as the external facade (in Art Deco style), internal lift lobbies and lift cars and roof top antenne, have been maintained in their original condition. Internally the structure features a grand entrance foyer, marble staircase and stained-glass windows to the lift.

Building Materials:

The dominant building material is so-called Benedict Stone, made locally from 1928 using crushed natural stone and colored cement to resemble Brisbane Tuff.

The stone was produced at the Benedict Stone Works at Newstead under license to Catholic Archbishop Duhig from the parent company in the USA. The process crushed rocks to 5mm size material, which was then mixed with coloured cement.

The facade on the ground floor level is comprised of pink fine
