URPoint Details

This URP is provided and maintained by members of the Geological Society of Australia as a geo-located community knowledge service.

Riverside Centre belongs to a group of towers associated with the financial and commercial district. The Brisbane Stock Exchange, later ASX, made this building the financial heart of Brisbane in the late 1980s

History:

This skyscraper, designed by Harry Seidler has 40 stories and is 146 metres high. The site was initially a cemetery in the convict days. Before 1984 this site was occupied by low level buildings and the wooden Eagle Street Wharves. In the early 1990s this building used to house the Brisbane Stock Exchange until it was amalgamated into the Australian Stock Exchange Ltd on the 1 April 1987.

The trading boards were used for the last time on 28 September 1990, when they were replaced by a computerized system. The ASX was still present as a tenant until about 2006. An ASX board is still located in the foyer.

The area towards the river, the Riverside Plaza, is part of the site development by Harry Seidler who wanted the Riverside Centre to open Brisbane to the River. The Plaza is home to a number of Brisbane's finest restaurants, bars and cafes and is now incorporated into the River Walkway.
