Queen Victoria personally chose the name 'Queensland' in 1859. Her statue is one of many scattered throughout her then Empire.
History:
This bronze statue was inspired by the original in Portsmouth, England. The statue was created by English sculptor Thomas Brock and unveiled in 1906 and the area became Queens Gardens. Part of the site was originally the Executive Gardens; the remainder of the site had various uses including the Anglican Pro-Cathedral and other church buildings.
The last remaining building (which was occupied by the Criminal Investigation Branch) was demolished in the 1960's and the Gardens in its present form were established in 1963.
Building stones
The steps and base are made from Enoggera Granite (light grey). The pillar itself comprises Helidon Sandstone(Formation: Woogaroo Subgroup).
